Jubilee Players

Home

The Jubilee Players were founded over 40 years ago at a time when most villages of any size in Bucks had their own amateur dramatic society. Now it is one of the few that maintain a regular programme of productions. The aims and objects of the Society shall be the study and performance of plays to foster an interest in the art of drama and all funds shall be applied for the furtherance of these aims and objectives and for charity as agreed by the Society.

Each year, the Jubilee Players present:

The Christmas Panto – the opportunity for younger members aged 6 to 18 to showcase their talents as principal boy/girl, or in less demanding speaking parts or as dancers and chorus – as well as last year as Clodhopper the horse!

Meanwhile the older members have the opportunity to let their hair down or dress in drag as the fairies, baddies, the evil baron/sheriff, or the Panto Dame. Last year, we were fortunate to have a panto on an original theme – the Wild West, written by one of our own members, Adrian Ripley. This year’s Panto will be announced shortly.

The Easter production - Each year we put on a more serious production around Easter. In recent years we staged:

  • ‘The Rose and Crown’ by J B Priestly
  • Two one act plays  by Nina Warner Hooke: ‘Rock Bottom’ and ‘Festival Nightmare’
  • ‘The Four Queens’ by L du Garde Peach
  • ‘Kindly Keep It Covered’ by David Freeman.

A fun fun-raising event where members and their friends can spend some money towards the Society and enjoy themselves – recently we have held:

  • A ferret racing evening (with live ferrets)
  • A horse racing evening (hobbyhorses with live jockeys)
  • A quiz evening
  • A line dancing evening with dances being called by another of our members.

Special occasions

  • The Millennium Pageant to celebrate the history of Bierton, Broughton & Hulcott in 2000 (see photo page)
  • Our 40th anniversary celebration attended by many former members who had moved away
  • Christmas shows for Thame W.I., the Hartwell Day Centre, and Hulcott Nursing Home.

Summer meetings during the lull between productions:

  • Poetry readings
  • Play readings.
  • Members’ Barbecue
  • As well as a Burn’s Night celebration earlier in the year.

The Jubilee Players take their name from the Jubilee Hall in Bierton where we stage our main productions, and have use of the loft for storage.
